Working from Home with Biscuit the Pomeranian
I work from a laptop at a small table in Nimman, which means Biscuit has decided my keyboard is his personal territory. He is a three-and-a-half-year-old Pomeranian with the confidence of a German Shepherd and the body of a cushion, and he takes his role as office manager very seriously.
Every video call starts the same way. I unmute, say good morning, and a small fluffy face pops up at the bottom edge of the screen, right in the middle of a client's slide deck. A colleague in Melbourne told me I looked 'very cozy', which is not quite what I was going for.
He is at his best during lunch breaks, when he sits on my feet under the desk and sighs loudly, as if I've kept him waiting for hours. I've started putting a bowl of water within reach and closing the bedroom door during meetings, which helps a bit.
Honest verdict: working from home with a dog is distracting, and I would do it again tomorrow. Biscuit has never once asked for a raise, and he hasn't missed a deadline either, although he has eaten two pens.
