Three Hours on the Expressway with Fah

Fah has been in the back seat of my old sedan for most of his seven years, and he still treats every trip like a gift. We drove out to my parents' place in Chachoengsao on a rainy Sunday, and I kept checking the mirror. He sat with his chin on the door, eyes half closed, watching the rice fields and the billboards slide past.

Somewhere near the toll gate he lifted his head and pressed his nose against the window. I realized how much of the drive I had spent worrying and how little he had. He just wanted to be near me.

Now I take the slow road when I can. Fah reminds me that the destination matters less than the company.
