Slowly Winning Over an Anxious Rescue Shiba
Namtarn came to us at eleven years old, and the first week she hid behind the water heater and refused to eat unless the room was dark. The shelter said she had been surrendered after a move, and she clearly did not trust anyone. I was excited to meet her but also nervous that I would not know what to do.
Here is what worked for me. I sat on the floor, did not reach for her, and read aloud from my phone for twenty minutes every evening. She started coming closer on day five. By week three she was sleeping on the rug next to my desk, and when I came home from work she greeted me with her whole body wiggling, which Shiba fans know is a big deal.
Anxious dogs need time, not pressure. Use the same routine every day, offer treats gently, and let them decide when to approach. Namtarn is still a little shy with strangers, but she has picked me as her person, and that is enough for both of us.

Namtarn is lucky to have found you, I hope she comes out from behind that heater soon.

How long did it take before she started eating with the lights on? Did you keep the bowl in the same spot or move it closer to where she was hiding? We're fostering a shy dog next month, so any small tip helps. Thanks for writing this out.

We adopted a shy corgi last year and it took about three months before Teddy trusted us. The first time he came to lie next to me on the couch was the best day ever, so I know how good the wait feels.

I'm going to try the slow-approach routine with Ruby the next time she gets nervous around new people.

Poor Namtarn, the water heater hiding spot breaks my heart a little. Give her time, the slow days usually turn into the best ones.
