Looking after a Java sparrow while I was away
Finding someone to look after Tofu for a week in Phuket was harder than booking my own flight. She is a Java sparrow, four and a half years old, grey with a pink beak and a very bossy voice. Birds are not like cats; you cannot just leave a bowl and hope for the best. I asked friends, a pet shop and a lady in my building who had kept canaries for thirty years. I chose the lady, mainly because she laughed when she saw the cage and said, now I know who runs this flat.
I left a long note on the fridge about the millet and the Tuesday bath. When I came home Tofu was chirping louder than ever, and the lady said they had got on very well. I suspect Tofu is already planning her next holiday.

If you're leaving a bird with someone new, ask them to come over once before you go so the bird gets used to their face and voice. A cloth over the cage at night can keep a nervous little one calmer too.

I'm saving this for the next time we need a sitter, because I never thought about how much the right person matters for a bird. Checking their experience first is such a useful tip. Tofu is lucky to have someone who wrote this all down so clearly.

Udon would have made a fuss about the bird too. When I was away once, leaving someone to check on my cat was way harder than it looked, so I can really picture how stressful that was.

Eine Tierpension mit Erfahrung bei Vögeln wäre bei uns damals die Rettung gewesen. Dass Vögel ganz anders sind als Katzen, merkt man erst, wenn man selbst auf sie aufpassen muss.
