Lay Is Scared of Everything, and That's Okay

CWChaiwat Wongsakul31 August 2026·1 min read
Lay has been with me for almost three months. At first she was scared of motorbikes, scared of visitors, and wouldn't touch her food bowl if someone was watching. So I made one simple rule: no forcing. She comes to me when she's ready. What really helped was rewarding small steps, like walking to the door even for a second, instead of waiting for her to get everything right. I also stopped bending over her or staring straight into her eyes when I approached, since some dogs read that as a threat. She now sleeps on my bed, though she still jumps every time a motorbike passes our Nimman gate. If you're adopting a nervous dog, be patient. Progress isn't measured in days, it's measured in trust.

My poodle was the same way when we first got her, nervous about every new sound. It took months of patience before she'd come to me on her own.

Kleiner Tipp: Lass Lay das Futter in Ruhe fressen, ohne dass jemand zuschaut.

We're going to try the no forcing rule with Charlie, because he gets nervous around new people too. I like that you let Lay decide when she's ready. Tuktuk is the opposite and wants to meet everyone, so this will be a new experience for us. Thanks for sharing.

This hit close to home. We had a rescue who wouldn't eat with anyone watching, so we stepped out of the room for a bit. Slow progress is still progress.

Lay is braver than my Udon, who still hides from the vacuum cleaner 😂

Lay is lucky to have someone this patient. Three months is not very long, and it sounds like she's already coming round.

Teaching a Scottish Fold to Tolerate Water

I'll be honest: I never planned to teach a cat to swim. Kiwi is a four-year-old Scottish Fold with round ears and a very round opinion about water. When we moved into our Silom condo, the bu...
