Pulling a Kitten Out of the Drain: What I Learned

KSKanya Saelim11 September 2026·1 min read

On Saturday morning Coco, our nine-year-old Labrador Retriever, started whining at the storm drain outside our soi in Ekkamai. At first I thought it was a rat. Then I heard a tiny meow coming from under the metal grate, about a meter down.

Here is what worked for us. First, keep your dog back so he does not scare the kitten further down. Second, do not reach in with your hand, because a frightened kitten can scratch badly. We used a long piece of bamboo and a soft towel, and after about fifteen minutes a wet, furious little kitten came up into the light.

Third, check the animal properly afterward. She had a scraped paw and was very cold, so we wrapped her in a towel and took her to a vet. Coco sat patiently beside us the whole time, tail thumping on the pavement. She now has a new name, Nam, and a home with my sister.

If you ever have to get something out of a drain, a long-handled net or a towel on a rope is safer than reaching in with your hands. Keep the area calm and give the animal a clear way out before you do anything else.

What a lovely story. Coco sounds like such a good dog, and I loved how she just kept whining at that drain until someone finally listened. You clearly paid attention, and that little kitten is lucky to have you two. Thanks for writing it up so clearly.

Thanks for sharing this. It's a good reminder for anyone who walks their dog past storm drains. Glad the kitten made it out safely.

Keeping Ping Cool When the Pavement Burns
