Hot Pavement and Happy Paws: My Summer Routine with Yaya
Living in Silom in the hot season, I've learned the street can be brutal for a small dog. Yaya is my seven-year-old Pomeranian, and her paws are just a few centimetres above the pavement. Last June I noticed her lifting her feet and hopping at a corner, which made me rethink our daily walks.
Now we go out early, before eight, or late after sunset. I test the pavement with the back of my hand for several seconds; if it's too hot to hold, we take a taxi or stay in. I carry a small bottle of water and a folding bowl. Once back home, I wipe her paws with a cool damp cloth and look for dirt or small cuts.
So far it's working. She seems calmer and more relaxed on walks, and she trots with her tail up again. I still get a few looks on the sidewalk when I carry her, but I'd rather be safe.
