Milky

Caring for a Dog as the Years Add Up

EJEmily Johnson24 October 2026·1 min read

Milky is a Poodle who is only one and a half, so she is far from being a senior. Still, I am 66 myself, and I have been reading about how to care for older dogs, since I hope she will be with me for a long time.

Here is what I have started doing. I take her to the vet for a check-up twice a year rather than once, and we keep her weight steady with small portions. I also added a short daily walk on the carpeted path near our condo, because soft surfaces are easier on joints as dogs age.

Her grooming routine has changed too. Brushing every few days helps me spot lumps or skin problems early. Small habits now will make the later years much easier for both of us.

Thank you for writing this. I am older too, and I found the part about keeping Milky's routine gentle really helpful. It is lovely that you are planning so far ahead for her. I will pass this along to a friend who has an elderly Pekingese, and I hope you and Milky have many more good years together.
